Become an expanded functions dental assistant

Dental assistants support patient care by performing a wide range of clinical, technical, and administrative duties. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are prepared for:

  • Assisting the dentist during various clinical procedures
  • Capturing and processing dental radiographs (x‑rays)
  • Reviewing a patient’s medical history and obtaining vital signs such as blood pressure and pulse
  • Serving as the infection control lead by developing protocols and preparing/sterilizing instruments and equipment
  • Helping patients feel comfortable before, during, and after dental treatment
  • Providing postoperative and home‑care instructions following surgeries or restorative procedures
  • Teaching effective oral hygiene practices to patients (e.g., brushing, flossing, nutritional counseling)
  • Taking dental impressions for study models
  • Carrying out office management duties, often involving computer-based tasks
  • Communicating with patients and suppliers, including scheduling, phone calls, billing, and supply ordering
  • Assisting with direct patient care across dental specialties such as orthodontics, pediatrics, periodontics, and oral surgery
  • Placing and finishing direct restorations (fillings) and temporary crowns
  • Performing coronal polishing and preventive fluoride

Indiana certificates and radiology licensure

The following licenses and certificates are available to graduates of the dental assisting program:

  • Dental Radiographer License (Indiana Department of Health)
  • Certificate of completion for laboratory & clinical Expanded Restorative Functions (EFDA)
  • Indiana Certificate for Coronal Polishing and Caries Prevention Procedures for Dental Auxiliaries
  • Didactic course for Administration of Nitrous Oxide for Dental Auxiliaries
  • Students are eligible to take the three Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) exams to become a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA).

Certificate requirements and courses

The dental assisting program is a full-time, two-semester program that requires the completion of 33 credit hours. The curriculum consists of 15 required classes that include approximately 1,000 hours of lectures, labs, and clinical experiences. All instruction takes place at the School of Dentistry, located on the IU Indianapolis campus in downtown Indianapolis. Students are required to complete at least 300 clinical hours and to take all three components of the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) examination—Infection Control (ICE), Radiation Health and Safety (RHS), and General Chairside (GC). As a CODAaccredited program,students are eligible for these examinations based on their enrollment in the program.

The dental assisting certificate program also prepares students who are interested in further their education in dentistry or would like expand their career opportunities by earing a bachelor's degree.

To be eligible to apply to the dental assisting program, applicants must meet minimum skill standards and the admission requirements, which include:

  • Admission to IU Indianapolis as an undergraduate student
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale

After admission to IU Indianapolis, applicants must submit a separate application to the dental assisting program.

Costs

Tuition and fee costs vary depending on residency and the number of credit hours taken each semester. You can search the IU Indianapolis master fee list to find out what fees you’ll have to pay as a dental assisting student. However, keep in mind that there are additional program and clinical fees for dental assisting students that may not be included in the estimate.

 

Financial aid

Dental assisting students are eligible to receive financial aid. New IU Indianapolis students are initially classified as pre–dental assisting. Financial aid is awarded after students are formally accepted into the dental assisting program.

Some types of financial aid and scholarships are available only to students who are pursuing a bachelor’s degree. Dental assisting certificate students planning to complete a bachelor’s degree can maintain eligibility for these programs by declaring the intended bachelor’s degree major while completing the dental assisting certificate.
